A Chairman's Welcome

3 April 2018

Dear Members and Friends of the British Business Club Düsseldorf

May I wish a very warm welcome to the British Business Club Düsseldorf (BBCD) website to all members, friends, sponsors and other visitors. You can find out a lot about our club by exploring our website, viewing our club brochure and seeing what events we are planning and those that we have held. Nearly all of our events are open to non-members. If you are a non-member and wish to go on our mailing list for news and events, just drop us a line on the enquiry form at the bottom of our website.

The club had a full and varied programme of events in 2017 and 2018 will be just as eventful. Some 26 of us went to see the Willy Russell play, Educating Rita, on 28 January, performed by the English Theatre Düsseldorf at the Theater Museum, following on from another club party to the same play in December. A further 20 or so of us will be going to see a new play, Some Girl(s) by Neil LaBute, at the same venue and by the same theatre group. If you want to join us, please contact me soonest.

We had over 100 guests for our first main event of 2018, the Burns' Night Celebrations at the Industrie-Club on Friday 9 February. Good fun and Scottish dancing was enjoyed by one and all, as you can see from a selection of photos from the event:

We also raised over EUR 1,000 for the two charities, the Bahnhofsmission and the Royal British Legion, from the charity auction at the Burns’ Night Celebration. We are very grateful to our sponsors for the Burns’ Night (see details of the programme).

We had a very good attendance at our networking lunch on 23 February at the Hotel Nikko, devoted to the theme of Brexit. There were two talks by our treasurer, Paul Stheeman, and one of our members, Graham Mead (see Brexit lunch invitation). There were some very good debates and thought-provoking questions and answers at the event. We hope to come back again to this subject on another occasion later in the year.

Our next Business Networking Lunch will be held on Friday 27 April 2018 at the Hotel Nikko. We welcome up to three speakers for these networking events, so please let us know if you would like to take up this opportunity.

Club members and guests had a lot of fun at the horse races at the Grafenberg Rennbahn in Düsseldorf on Sunday 25 March.

Stadt Düsseldorf is organising a concert at Schloss Eller by an ensemble from Aldworth, near Reading, on Sunday 15 April. As you will remember, last year was the 70th anniversary of the special relationship between Düsseldorf and Reading. This year is the 30th anniversary of the official town twinning of Düsseldorf with Reading, and also with Haifa and Chemnitz. The Schloss Eller concert forms a part of this year's twinning celebrations.

We have been kindly invited by the British Women's Club Düsseldorf to join them for their Royal Wedding Celebrations in Düsseldorf on Saturday 19 May. Please mention that you are a BBCD member if you wish to attend.

Our members are also welcome to join the Oxford & Cambridge Society of Rheinland for a lecture on the theme of Cambridge University and its Spies on the evening of Thursday 3 May. Please mention that you are a BBCD member or friend of the club if you wish to attend. The lecture will be in German.

The first British Flair event of 2018 will be held at Schloss Merode from 20-22 April. The club will have a stand there again in co-operation with the British Women's Club Düsseldorf, as it did last year. The second British Flair event of 2018 will be held at Burg Linn in Krefeld from 7-9 September.

The club’s annual general meeting (AGM) will be held at the Industrie-Club at 18.30 on Tuesday 28 April. We need a minimum 20% turn out of members, otherwise the meeting cannot go ahead, so please do your best to come. Nomination papers are available if you want to stand or propose someone for any of the committee positions.

The minutes of the 2017 AGM are available in both English and German.

This year will be the 60th anniversary of the British Business Club Düsseldorf on 8 July.  We plan to hold a special celebration on 1 July at Deichgraf (Südpark), so please mark it in your diaries. More details to follow.

Some of our members are joining the British Chamber of Commerce Germany (BCCG), Region North Rhine-Westphalia at an event entitled "Goldilocks or Rumpelstiltskin? Sustainable growth or false economic promises" at the HSBC Headquarters in Düsseldorf on the evening of 23 January. HSBC's chief economist, Stefan Schilbe, will be the speaker for the event. Many thanks to BBCG!

One of our main events of the year will be our Burns’ Night Celebration at the Industrie Club in Düsseldorf on Friday 9 February. For other events, see also our events section of the website.

We will also shortly be having a dinner with a speaker from the Hilden-based company, Qiagen, details still to be confirmed.

Our next Business Networking Lunches will be held on Friday 23 February 2018, Friday 27 April 2018 and Friday 29 June 2018 at the Hotel Nikko. We welcome up to three speakers for these networking events, so please let us know if you would like this opportunity.

A Chairman's Welcome

Dear Members and Friends of the British Business Club Düsseldorf

We have had some very enjoyable events over the last couple of months. The Portuguese wine and food evening entitled Reynolds: A British Family in Portugal and Mouchão was hosted by Carlos Quintas at his Portuguese wine cellar in the Altstadt on Friday 6 October. We all came away knowing a lot more about Portugal and its wines and sampled a dozen very interesting red and white varieties. Carlos has a wealth of knowledge about Portuguese wines and the well-known wine expert and writer, Jancis Robertson, has often relied on his expertise when exploring this subject.

Our last networking lunch of the year was held on 27 October at the Hotel Nikko, when we had three speakers.

There was a fascinating visit to the Gerresheimer Glassworks in Essen on Friday 10 November to see how the company makes bottles for the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and drinks industries. We were not allowed to take photos in the plant, but you can see us in a photo at the entrance.

We held a dinner on 14 November at the Hotel Nikko with Dr Henning Beck, a biochemist, neuroscientist and “science slammer”, as our guest speakers. He enlightened us about how the brain functions and was inundated with questions at the end of his talk.

Our annual Christmas party was held at the Kosaido Golf Club on Saturday 2 December.  A reception in the entrance hall with welcome drinks and background music from our Live Band Dr. Martin Swing set the tone for a super Christmas party.  Kosaido’s open fire place dining room provided a perfect atmosphere for a delicious classic British Christmas three-course dinner which was served punctuated by five Christmas poems, with the live band playing throughout the evening. You can see photos of the Christmas party below.

We had a tour for members and guests around the Lush Handmade Cosmetics production plant in the South of Düsseldorf on 13 December. The company has been in the news lately and has brought a lot of new jobs to Düsseldorf:

A Chairman's Welcome

8 September 2017

Dear Members and Friends of the British Business Club Düsseldorf

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the British Business Club Düsseldorf (BBCD) website to all our members, friends and visitors. We will be gradually increasing the content on our website over the next few months, so do come back and get updated from time to time.

Tam Pearce will be managing the stand for us, as well as the welly wanging, with a team of helpers, for which many thanks from us all. Unfortunately the traditional Last Night of the Proms concert will not be held this year, as previously reported, due to the withdrawal of the major sponsor.

Brexit

The repercussions and uncertainties of Brexit meeting report continue to preoccupy many of our members. In co-operation with a new lobby group, British in Germany, the British Consul-General, Rafe Courage, hosted an open meeting for British citizens in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate to discuss citizens’ rights following Brexit that was held on 30 August at the Hotel Intercontinental in Düsseldorf. The meeting was well attended and there was an update on the current status of the negotiations with regards to citizens’ rights. Representatives from the Embassy, the British Consulate General and British In Germany gave presentations and answered questions.

Daniel Tetlow, a journalist and the co-founder of British In Germany, said he would be very pleased to hear from all Brits living in North Rhine Westphalia. His group is affiliated to a wider coalition, “British In Europe”, and actively campaigns to protect the rights of British citizens in Germany and other EU countries and the rights of EU citizens in the UK during the Brexit negotiations:

The British Embassy provided the following links to the joint EU-UK technical note on citizens’ rights, an updated version of which has just been published following the August round of negotiations:

If you would like to receive e-mail alerts when new information on citizens' rights is available you can register for updates at:

One of the meeting attendees asked towards the end whether the audience would be willing to signal by show of hands whether it thought that Brexit was "a huge mistake by UK government". The result was an overwhelming yes, perhaps not surprisingly. Many British expats complained during the meeting that they were not allowed to vote in the Brexit referendum, although they were still British nationals and paying UK taxes.

A British Embassy spokesman, when questioned about a possible discontinuation of the rules allowing dual nationality, told the audience that, if that were to happen, the cut-off date would most likely be the date that the UK leaves the EU.

It was also announced that further such meetings would also be held in Cologne, Paderborn and Bielefeld.

A Chairman's Welcome

30 March 2017

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the British Business Club Düsseldorf (BBCD) website to all of our members, friends and visitors.

My apologies for the long period in which the BBCD website has either been down or not up-to-date. This was due to a variety of problems, which have taken some time to resolve. We will update members at the AGM about these issues.

I would like to remind all our members that our AGM is coming up on Tuesday 25 April at 18.00 at the Industrie Club in Düsseldorf. I urge you all to attend. We need a quorum in order to proceed with the club business and with the election of next year’s committee. As always there will be free drinks and food.

I am standing down as BBCD chairman at the AGM, as they say in Germany “with one laughing eye and one crying eye”. I have so many other commitments that it would be too difficult for me to continue in this role and to do it justice. I would like to thank the current BBCD committee, Paul Stheeman (co-opted treasurer), Tam (vice-chairman), Vincent McCue (secretary), Clodagh Durkin (marketing and social secretary)  and Monique-Alexandra Kerslake (co-opted member), for all of their hard work and support over the last twelve months and I will have more to say about this at the AGM.

If any of the current club members would like to stand for any of the electable committee positions, they can either contact me or Ian Mackenzie, the returning officer. They must be in possession of a current British passport to stand for one of these offices, in compliance with our current club statues. However, we also welcome expressions of interest from non-British-passport holders for positions as co-opted committee members. We are always short of volunteers and welcome any outside help to help us with our work.  We already have one nomination for a successor to me as chairman, who is a former committee member.

We will be hosting a special event later this year to thank all of our club sponsors. They have been very understanding through the period of difficulties we have had with the website. More details will follow shortly.

Kind regards
